How to Remove Limescale from your Bathroom

What is limescale? Limescale is a hard chalky deposit, consisting mainly of calcium carbonate, that often builds up inside kettles, hot water boilers, and pipework, especially that for hot water.

It is also often found as a similar deposit on the inner surfaces of old pipes and other surfaces where "hard water" has evaporated."

The problem with limescale

Firstly, increased energy bills – As your heating system becomes clogged with limescale, it has to work harder in order to bring your home up to the right temperature. Limescale also leaves a grimy look in your bathroom and on shower doors and can be very difficult to get off, something very annoying for those trying to keep their restrooms clean. Although New Zealand's water is considered relatively 'soft water' and doesn't contain minerals such as calcium and magnesium like 'hard water', it's still an issue in some parts of the country. With hard water it's difficult to lather with soap or shampoo and it builds up scale deposits on water-using appliances. This leaves residue such as limescale on bathtubs and shower glass which can be very difficult to get rid of when not treated with the correct product.

How to remove Limescale in 3 easy steps

1. Wet the area you are cleaning then put a small amount of the Kemsol Haze Off onto a non-scratch scouring pad - we suggest using the White Hand Pad for the best results.

2. Then firmly scrub in a circular motion until stain or spots are gone. We suggest working a small area at a time. For extremely stubborn stains, leave on surface for 10-30 minutes to allow more time to break chemical bonds. Don’t be afraid to put some elbow grease into it, if you are using a non-scratch scouring pad you won’t damage the glass. More than one treatment may be necessary in some cases. Note: don’t forget to clean the other side of the glass too as water spots are often on both sides.

3. Rinse cleaned area with water until surface is clean and dry using a towel.

How to avoid limescale from forming?

If you wipe or squeegee your shower glass after every shower this will prevent a lot of limescale build up on the shower glass. You may still need to re-apply Kemsol Haze Off every 6-8 weeks or even longer depending on the water quality in your area.
